good subject. i drove for years thinking that all gas stations wanted to do was make money by doing coolant and brake fluid flushes (well they probably do but i didnt see the need) until i took the head off my 83 900T and saw all the pitting around the coolant passages on the head! good thing the block is cast...
re brake/clutch stuff, i just did my brakes all around and the fluid coming out of the back brakes was virtually black (not my fault!!!).
But on reassembly when i bled the brakes i had no brake pedal resistance so frigged around for 2 days trying to figure out what i did wrong. even changed out the booster and master cyl...
finally i think i figured it out: i had been suspending the catch-bottle above the caliper thinking that this is the best way to see the bubbles coming out. trouble was the fluid wasnt draining enough, thus keeping air in the system. once i put the bottle below the caliper i think i got much better flushing and i could still see the air bubbles popping out the bleeder valve.
i also did a google search and found a post on Volvo brake bleeding; reading the fine print for bleeding the MC, it suggested putting the pressure bleeder cap on (sans pressure) and then pressing the brake pedal a few times to allow any trapped air to pop up out of the MC. presto, problem solved. however, not sure which idea solved the problem...
anyway, i hope this helps future 'bleeders'.
oh, i forgot one other thing i learned. i put new pads on the front brakes and like an idiot i hooked up the e brake lever too early so i had a very tight fit getting the pads in. then i had to loosen off the ebrake cables and was prepared to take both front seats and the console out to access the ebrake cables, when i discovered simply taking the drivers seat out gives access to a little panel on the side of the console and thus the adjusting nuts for the cables!!!! i 'd always wondered what that was there for...
then i remembered you have to hold the ebrake cables stationary while you turn the adjusting nuts or nothing will happen, but to access the cables you need to pop off the forward console cover (shift boot, etc) and hold the cables with needlenose pliers. perhaps vice grips on the cable at the caliper will accomplish the same thing but i'm not sure.
anyway, i learn every time i turn (a wrench that is).
