HANG ON, did you say that _none_ of the listed components were attached to this motor, not even the 5spd? So what is the engine block sitting on right now? If it's a flat surface then of course it can't turn over because the rods' big ends and the crankshaft need room to swing down into the oilpan. Without a tranny my motor couldn't turn more than a few degrees either while it was sitting on wood blocks, which terrified me briefly also.
If not that, then pull your spark plugs to eliminate compression, pull your cams/sprockets to eliminate timing interference, and then pull on your loose timing chain to see if it's bound around the crank sprocket. Every time the crank caught after I joined it back to the transmission, that's what it was.
The Townsend site goes into excellent detail about putting all this back together if you read the technical document about doing a head gasket.

Depending on how many miles this motor has/how long it's been sitting, you'd want to take a deeper look at it anyway while it's this easy.
