taking the shafts out should allow ALL of the valves to close (unless some are bent), as well as it will "mess up" the timing, but that's not so hard to reset so long as you pay close attention to your index marks. Yes the tensioner is replaceable once you've pulled it, you just need a new seal ring when you put it back ($1.69 at eEuroparts: http://www.eeuroparts.com/(5zzub145axwqta55mhmyyz45)/productdetail.aspx?searchResults=1&code=7508690)
If the motor suddenly spins with the cams out, you'll know it's a timing issue or something in the head, and if it doesn't you'll know that it's something in the crankcase stopping you. Again, between the Bentley manual on timing and Townsend's headgasket HowTo, there's all the info you need to reset the timing.
