Sorry to say this, Paul, but they changed the transmissions from the mostly trusty, but old, Borg Warner 3-speed to the more modern Aisin-Warner autobox in the NG 900.

The 5-speed transmissions are generally good. Up through the '88 model year, they had a relatively small pinion gear bearing (this bearing supports the output to the final drive. Under heavy driving conditions, the smaller pinion bearing is relatively more prone to failure than the '89-onwards transmissions. No matter what size pinion bearing it has, longevity is dependent on the driving/shifting style of the previous owner(s), how often they changed the transmission oil, and sometimes, just plain old luck.

If you do try one with a 5-speed, listen for a whine in 4th and 5th gears at 50 MPH and above. That means that the pinion bearing is worn. If it pops out of reverse or any forward gear, that means problems. Remember that you need to come to a full stop and touch a forward gear before shifting into reverse as reverse is not synchronized and you don't want to grind into reverse.

Take Whitlow's words with a grain of salt. He seems to be very opinionated on BG synchroshift on many of his 8 posts on the board to date. Historically, on this board, some people have reported that they have used it with variable results. Generally, the 5-speed transmissions are supplied with 10W30 oil, but some gear oils like Honda MTL, Redilne MTL, and Mobil 1 75 weight gear oil have been used with great success. This goes beyond your original question, but I thought that it all required some clarification.
