Having been through plenty of 900's myself and friends with them I've got to say that I'm really unconvinced about the oil and oil changes in the tranny.
My reading of the Saab factory manuals says not to change it and is pretty specific on what oil to use. It's not like engine oil picking up combusion byproducts.
The real issue is pinion bearing failure and I'm not sure lubrication is the problem. Stomping on the gas in first or second, especially wih the wheels turned or up hill is a biggie. I suspect from some of the posts on here, slamming into reverse without engaging a forward gear first, is a problem as well. The gear chips can't be good. Moving them around by filling the the tranny with new, high detergent, oil may not be good either .. chips stuck to the case are good .. chips in the oil and then bearings are bad!
I'd rather buy a C900 from a cautious, gentle, driver than a lube experimenter that changes the oil all the time! Engine oil is a different story. Though once again I think we all know people that eat up air cooled, 8V, turbos and other people that never have a problem .. can't imagine why.
Flame protection on!
