Three things- you got the first one right.
1. Check for vacuum leaks. If they're bad, the vents won't work right and you will hear a hissing noise with the engine on under the hood. Also check the vacuum nipples (the correct term, sorry) and bushing/grommets where the nipples (that word again) exit the intake manifold. There's one on the valve cover too.
2. Clean out around the throttle valve and the venturi plate; there's undoubtedly lots of oil in there and it's making your car run rich. It's just how the system works; as regular maintenance I clean these twice a year.
3. Probably a 50-50 chance the idle speed valve is sticking and failed. This caused a 500 RPM idle and stall with my car until I replaced it. First spray some penetrating oil in it, and when that only fixes it for a week, replace the valve. I actually got mine from Saab (!) for a halfway decent price. They fail after ten years or so; there's a bi-metallic spring in there. Yep, toaster technology.
Send me an e-mail if you want pictures or advice for any of this. Last of the 8 valve sleds!
Or as the Comic Book Guy would put it, "Slowest... Saabs... Everr." Too bad. It's VERY difficult to kill them.
See also Dana Arenius' 8 valve page- only a few things different from '85 to '88. Lots of wordy-word stuff but the facts are there.
