16V head, timing chain noise?

I'm hearing a kind of a whirring sound from an '86 900S that's coming from the region of the timing chain/camshaft sprocket area. It definitely isn't the AC compressor or idler (took the belt off), nor is it the water pump (changed pump recently, no change in noise). Doesn't sound like it's coming from the alternator or PS pump.
I don't have any experience (yet) with 16V timing chains, tensioners, guides, etc. Is this a characteristic noise? Does it mean impending failure, or can it wait? The car has been making this noise for some time (at least a year, maybe two!), but I may need to rely on this car for some long range highway miles soon.
The noise is definitely a cyclic whirring noise, that seems to be at about camshaft frequency (1/2 engine speed). It also seems to make a faint clicking or rattling noise some of the time. It's worse on cold startup, then quiets down as the engine warms up but can still be heard even when warm.
Anyone have any similar experiences?
