In theory, all that exhaust stuff is pretty straightforward. The only tool you really need is a 13mm wrench for the exhaust clamps and flange bolts, etc. You should be able to buy replacement parts that bolt right on from many of the site sponsors.

HOWEVER, in practice you will find that some of the connections, particularly the slip-together ones, don't come apart without a little 'persuasion'. Corrosion and other gunk sticks 'em together pretty good sometimes, and sometimes it's hard to get 'em apart without destroying them. This problem can be avoided by replacing everything aft of catalytic converter, where there's a gasketed flange joint. I think you can get all the parts you need for under $100. Don't forget to order new gaskets (where used) and rubber hangers.

BTW, your problem is likely a hole in the muffler caused by water accumulating in there (normal). Stick your head down there and see if that's where the noise is coming from, and/or move your hand around near the muffler (careful, HOT!) and feel for puffs of exhaust.
