Take the turn signal unit off the steering column (requires dropping the plastic fascia below the steering wheel, undoing the pair of screws holding both stalks to the column, and the 2 screws holding the turn signal to the u-shaped yoke). Undo the wiring connections making sure to mark down which wire came off which terminal (and/or have the bently handy for re-connection).

Look at the back of the turn signal unit and drill out the heads of the rivets that you find there. Carefully open the unit up by removing the plastic back. Parts may kind of jump out so be cautious. Once apart you will see two metal divots/channels in the casing. This is what the signals catch on when they are activated. Take a power drill and select a bit that looks to be about the right diamater to match the divots. Deepen the divots by pressing the side of the spinning drill bit into these locations.

Reassemble the turn signal. Some have used glue to keep the plastic back on however i much prefer simply using a slim zip tie to hold things in place (faster and more permanent in my opinion). Just wrap it around the whole casing through the forest of metal connections. Be careful that the zip tie does not impede reassenbly of the unit on the steering wheel. The zip tie will hold pretty much forever . . . at least is has on both of my cars.
