Saab turbo fog lights - Factory or After market?

In September I bought a 1988 Saab Turbo Convertible as a birthday gift for my son. He told me that he didn't like the appearence of the fog lights. I told him that was the way the car came from the factory. He said he wants "embedded" fog lights and later showed me a picture of a similar Saab with such lights. He pointed out a couple of Saab convertibles (simialr year) that had no fog lights. He thinks they are after market. I have seen, both in pictures and in person, several Saabs like that with the exposed lights, he thinks that it was just a "trend" and that was what people did. I didn't get an owner's manual with the car but I do see that there is a "built in" foglight switch.
Did these car's come from the factory like this or are they aftermarket?
The more I think about it, I wonder? I would think that the factory lights would be embedded into the bumper, was that an option for those models?
