1) Normally, Saab Bosch foglights are rectangular and NOT embedded. I think they look just fine, so I restored mine. They are held in place by brackets that attach to the back of the bumper with 3 screws and then protrude downward.
2) Embedded lights were in the AERO front bumpers. Those were optional and seem to have been more widely available in Europe.
3) You can buy th Aero kits in the USA for anywhere between 500 and 1000 dollars. You then need to paint them. They are made of fiberglass, are low to the ground, and crack on impact. They look cool, but are not practical if you live in a city where people park by feel/braile.
4) Some hardtops and convertibles did not get the optional foglights, so they weren't there on many models you and your son have seen. Foglights were not standard.
5) Saab foglights are situated such that people break them off when they park near concrete sidewalks. These people then frequently pull the foglights off and drive without them (we are after-all driving 10-18 year old convertibles.)
6) Your son's car was a gift? Tell the boy to stop looking a gift hourse in the mouth. Then offer to sell the car as scrap and buy him a bicycle.
