Thanks for your help greg. I'm sure dropping the whole transmission would be the smart thing to do however i have such a restricted area to work in that i have no place to lay things out on. I took a look at the area around the differential and i think there may be room to pull it out. Actually fairly spacious back there.
I've looked at photos of two different transmission rebuilds (on jeff and royce's site and jon's at saabpics.org) and i'm still a little unclear how far the layshaft extends and how it is held in place. It seems to extend all the way from the transfer case (below the lower chain gear) to the differential. I just can't tell how it is held in place at both ends. Is this correct?
if so, on the differential end it seems to be held by way of a plate with a "half-moon" cutout and a similar shape at the end of the rod. Bottom right of this photo:

On the transfer case end i really have no idea. Just a cap holding the end in place? I can see the end of it in this photo:

I would guess that this is this is the shaft being withdrawn here:

Any light that you could shed on this area would be much appreciated . . . particularly at the transfer case end. I guess it is not clear to me how the lower input chain gear interferes with removal.
