hey Aalto, here are some answers:
The layshaft is held in place by the flat key going through the half-moon at the back end of the shaft. You remove the 13mm bolt, the key, and pull the shaft out. There is nothing else holding it in.
You do NOT need to remove the lower input sprocket/bearing assembly to get out that gear. When you pull the layshaft out and disconnect the coupler, that gear falls out in your hands. Take care because there is a bearing inside with LOOSE rollers that can fall out everywhere.
The coupler is definitely NOT brass! It is steel and I've seen them wear and get sloppy on the splines but never strip out completely. Doesn't mean that it didn't happen on yours. To disconnect the coupler, start with 90-degree snap ring pliers to remove that snap ring (or a couple screwdrivers & prying) and then slide the coupler to the front of the car, up onto the gear, then remove gear (complete with coupler, snap ring, and bearing).
One more thing...look carefully at this picture that you cited:

Is your coupler really in that position? I've had a few *pop* forward right past that snap ring and automatically de-couple the shafts. Take a look and let me know. Feel free to email (click my name at top of post).
