Not to discredit what you observed, or that the SAAB is truly a great car...I've found mine amazingly easy to work on...but it's just that I noticed that the throttle-body fuel injection system that GM installed on my van 's old pushrod V8. It is truly the most simple EFI system that has ever been installed on an engine. Underneath my van's engine box is an unusually clean engine that is reminescant of the old muscle car engines of the 50's and 60's...suprise, it's electronically controlled!
It's sort of like a carburator in the fact that the engine intakes a "wet" mixture through the intake manifold, but it's fuel injection in the fact that the fuel is delivered through positive pressure, and the mixture is not relying on engine vacuum for proper fuel metering. the TBI/EFI system also controls timing through the distributor. I was quite suprised to notice my SAAB's APC does not control ignition timing on my 1990 T.C. The Bosch LH fuel injection system is more complex that GM's TBI system by far, but it is also a more effective system, especially for a performance vehicle. The difference is that my van's engine puts out about 200HP, the SAAB is only slightly less, at 165 HP, but the van's engine is 2.5 times larger in displacement, and uses almost twice the fuel traveling the same distance.
Ater putting the two engines in a comparason like that, it's easy to see that the SAAB's engine is truly superior in many ways, but it's just very interesting to see how two totally different approaches to engine technology were used to carry out the same task!
