Get yourself a bunch of cheap rubber vacuum hose, and replace everything you can find. There's a good possibility you'll improve your car's behavior, and you won't have to worry about leaky hoses for at least a few years.
After that (if necessary), you'll need to address the ignition/fuel delivery systems. New filters, plugs, wires, cap & rotor should give you more peace of mind. While you're at it, check the timing and fuel pressure.
Of course, doing all of that will make your $300 car a $400 car. Do you have a Bentley manual? It's almost as good a resource as this website. ;o)
