Certainly dabbing a little 518 over the timing cover-cylinder head seam is considered the prudent thing to do, but I forgot it as well. I haven't seen any leaks yet, but have put less than 100 miles on it so far. Remember that the headgaskets are intended by design to stand alone; sealant is just a little redundant insurance.
Shocks? Dunno. Maybe you should try lubing the threads on that shaft?
