I have a '93 900i 5 spd, occasionally, very very very occasionally it would display a similar symptom. I would get in and start driving and within 2 mins of leaving home, as if a switch was thrown, the car would try to die or stall, struggle to idle, would not react to throttle movements and within 30 seconds generally, it would just pick itself up and continue on. When I downloaded the ecu codes, no faults!
I went back to the Bently and studied the wiring layout. The AMM, AIC weren't operating but ECU was NOT aware of any fault condition, as if it was asleep, (for a better description). The problem only re-occurred intentionally once for me when I wriggled the loom on the motor adjacent to the AIC but could never induce the fault again. Since, I have removed the loom partially and cleaned the connectors and greased them, but I paid a lot of time in securing the negative connectors at the top of the head. Cleaning, recrimping, regreasing.....
The reason I was so careful with the negative leads is that the ECU negative is at this point of the engine. I also changed the ECU and pump relays to be sure but I believe the negative leads on the head were the problem for my car.
Good luck to you.
Cheers
