The handling problems don't sound like a CV joint issue alone.
Occasionally the axle nut will get loose and cause a problem like this. Unfortunately, your wheel bearing will be quickly destroyed if the nut is loose, so tightening up the nut is only a temporary fix to get on the road.
I would also check all supension items: broken ball joint, shot tie rod end, A arm mounts, broken shock mount, etc.
