in addition to the other great suggestions

Choose the bentley manual
other items which are great:
Gojo or similar hand cleaning gel
paper towels
latex gloves (for changing oil or other similar messy tasks)
clamp-on light or drop light. you never have too much lighting
digital tire pressure guage
creeper for waxing down low and other near the ground work
box of assorted electrical connectors
plastic wall-mount cabinet and trays for storing small parts
But above all else, get a toolbox or other locking container to store tools in. Even if you have your own garage, tools need a home. If you live at home and share a garage, tools will find a home in family member's vehicles, toolbags, grow legs of their own and leave, etc...
As far as brands and quality... Screwdrivers and torx drivers, air tools, rachets, quality brands make a big difference. A Craftsman will be several times stronger than what is sold at Wal-mart for example. Craftsman isn't even super high end, but I have always been pleased with them. If you have money to spend, the stuff in Griots is good too.
