It's relatively easy to replace it. If you can get one from a pick-n-pull, it will be relatively inexpensive. The best ones to get are from pre-'91 models. Instead of having a metal ball/pivot welded to the shift lever, the ball and pivot parts are plastic and they tend to last a long time.
You can stick a screwdriver into the hole down in the shift ball to shift. The shift lever is hollow where it broke off.
Pull up the shift boot. If you have leather shift boot, it will take some effort to get the lower end off the console. Pull the bottom of the boot backwards and you should be able to work a small plastic knive (dull side) around to release it. I just did this on an '88.
Turn the key to accessory. With the screwdriver, put the shift ball into neutral. Remove the 3 torx screws that hold the shift ball into the shifter assembly. You should be able to pry it up easily.
Installation will be the reverse of assembly.
