I've never done this myself, but this is how I understood the directions from my mechanic:
The vertical shifter (inside the car) connects to the transmission by a horizontal shaft (under the car). This shaft has a seal on it where it enters the transmission case. As the shaft wears, a burr (or rough patch) may be created on the shaft where it passes through the seal. To remove the burr, you would take off the side plates of the transmission to gain access to the shaft. Then you would use fine grit emery cloth (sandpaper made with high grade abrasives, but glued to cloth instead of paper) to smooth out the rough areas. Then you would rinse it all off (with oil) to remove the metal particles & abrasives. Reattach the transmission's side plates & refill with oil.
Of course, if anyone has any corrections, please let us know!
