Russell, trying to force the hardline on is a royal pita. I spent over an hour forcing one on with a flaring tool "vice" and a C-clamp...you have to re-set the vice after every barb. Simply not worth the trouble.
On the next car I used the high pressure hose jumper with no problems. A trick is to cut the old check valve off, leaving the nipple stub in the hardline. This provides support for the hose clamp. If you've already cut the line ahead of the nipple, I would put a small pipe nipple in the hard line so you don't crush it with the clamp. The new check valve will be strong enough to bear the hose clamp pressure on the other end.
