So what you're doing is lowering the control pressure which raises the fuel to air ratio during that warm-up period, making it run more rich. That's a good idea. But doesn't that also effect the normal run pressure?

I have taken the w.u. regulator apart just to see how it works. Aside from the elec current required to run through it, internal moving parts are few. There is one part that functions like a brake caliper piston, the outside of which you pop against for your mod. I've given that part a shot of lub before, and made sure it moves freely with the spring tension lever. But what I've discovered makes the engine warm-up period work best is ensuring that the aux air valve (we're talking older CIS, which my car has) is working. Dirt can certainly gum it up, but more than that is the small adjustment nut on top which locks the valve operating position. Because it must be shut during normal temp operation, I adjusted it so that it is just closed when fully warm. If adjusted too far beyond the "just" closed position when warm, then during the cold start period it will not be as open as needed. The idea is to give the cold start as much air flow through that valve as possible, and to have it closed just enough when it's warm. To make sure it is closed when warm, I pinch the hose shut (needle nose pliers will do the job) while idling. The ideal setting is when there is no difference in RPM's between the pinched and unpinched hose once the engine is fully warm. A little bit one way is an open valve and a little bit the opposite direction is too closed.

I once discovered I had a bad aux air valve some years back after noticing that no matter the locking nut location, the valve never fully shut inside even though it appeared shut, allowing a flow of air even when warm. A good used valve solved that problem.
