Inner Drivers - Cost to repair/opinions on swapping?

hey all
i posted earlier about my '89 900T 5-speed's inner drivers being nasty under load in the top of 3rd gear as well as all of 4th and 5th gear. i have driven with these conditions for a little more than 1000 miles, and i greased the passenger side ID (the bad one, as per the usual) with mobil 1 synthetic about 450 miles ago. the vibration hasnt improved. now, two questions arise. I have no urge to get halfway through an ID swap and discover that one is bad, but the failing one seems to have retained some of the OEM grease and isn't rusty - of course i can't tell about the ID til i can feel the contact surfaces, but still. SO is swapping them something that's worth looking into? or should i just hand it to my mechanic and tell him to replace them both? what would you say is the average cost of a repair like this, if i did it versus if he did it...? that and what do i do if i get halfway thru the swap and find a bad one? can i just reassemble it and take it to my mechanic? options and opinions are REALLY appreciated here, i'm new to the drivetrain DIY thing :-D
Thanks for input/suggestions/etc.!
