engine stop leak (good/bad/run away fast?)

Okay, I know any type of additive can be a contentious topic on this board, and I'm pretty wary of them myself, hence this post. In any case, my engine has had a leak for years, and has recently got somewhat worse. I probably have to add a quart every 600-700 miles, which is too much in my opinion. I just had to get about 600 dollars worth of work on the car, and can't really afford to properly fix the engine seals in the near future. So, has anyone had any luck with any type of leak stopping product? Or should I run, and run fast away from these things? I know it won't be a magical solution, but if I could put off the repair for a while that would be great. If anyone has any experience, what is a good product (if anything), and what should I avoid? I'm more or less worried about doing more harm than good. If I try something and it doesn't work, no big deal, but if I try something and it ruins my engine, that won't be good! I tried searching for this topic already and didn't find anything that useful. Thanks again everyone, I've been absent from saabnet for a couple of months, but it's good to be back.
