Excellent effort with the picture and all. As noted prior, that is indeed a one-way check valve, designed to block boost pressure going back into your crankcase via the valve cover. That your car now runs better with it removed suggests that not only was it not working, but it was a source of a vacuum leak. Perhaps one of the connecting hoses wasn't tight around one of the two end ports. Or maybe you replaced or reset the rubber grommet around the plastic breather fitting. Whatever you did, it sounds like you eliminated the vac leak issue. But now you have to replace that check valve to avoid over-pressurizing the crank.
