Hello all,
After three years of fairly ininterrupted SAABing, it is time to take the car off the road. The car is leaking everything a car can leak, plus the CVs were clanking and there was an ominous clunk in the right front corner when accelerating, turning, or hitting a bump. Pretty much all the time, actually.
Here's what I have so far. When I put a wrench on the right side lower ball joint, I noticed the upper A-arm shifting around. The bushings were totally gone. Not gone as in worn out. Gone as in no longer present. The A-arm mount pieces are beat to death as well so it's off to Pick-A-Part.
The engine is coming out because for me, it's easier to fix leaky freeze plugs, cracked exhaust manifolds, leaky front and rear seals, and other assorted ills while the engine is on the ground. Not to mention how much easier it is to pull the steering rack with the power unit out of the car.
Meanwhile, I decided to do a compression check before I pulled the battery. Here's what I found: #1: 145 psi, #2: 45psi, #3: 95psi, #4: 145psi. That was unexpected. Boy would I like this to be a head gasket problem. I'm thinking there's a valve involved as well. I'll do the timing chain at the same time.
While under the car, I also noticed the front of the transmission resting nicely on the "skid plate" apparatus so all three mounts are going bye-bye. Matter of fact, most every rubber part in the car will be replaced.
Here come the questions: 1. What is the Mobil spec number for the inner driver lubricant? I tried searching and nothing comes up. 2. Is it OK to ask if anyone out there has an uncracked single cam turbo exhaust manifold they'd be willing to part with? 3. If my car is equipped with the early style timing chain tensioner, must I replace it? 4. Are there economical alternatives to the original rubber bushings?
5. If I decide/ if it's necessary to rebuild the motor, can turbo pistons be found at a price less than the GNP of Botswana? 6. Does Vandevell still make bearings for this engine? 7. Anybody have horror stories with aluminum replacement radiators?
I cut my SAAB teeth on a 1972 99e with the Triumph-built engine which I rebuilt. Therefore, my pain tolerance is extremely high. The body on this car is almost perfect with no rust and shiny paint so it will be a very nice car when done. I hope to post some pics of the work as I go.
Thank you in advance for any help. I'm sure there will be more questions later. I'll use the search function before I ask them.
