I basically did all these repairs to my 84 900T that I bought new some 21 years ago this month. If you are going to take the engine out then I would rebuild the lower and upper end. You can get the stuff you need from Swedish Dynamics if you want vadevell stuff. The block on these engines are like a rock, impossible to destroy, so I doubt it is a bottom end issue. The aluminium head is a litle more touchy, they can warp valve guides wear out.
If you haven't trash the car and took good care of it you should be Ok and it is likly to be just a headgasket. Of course a leak down test would locate the problem exactly. I bet you turbo housing is shot as well. I replaced everything myself and it was a labor of love and I modded everything (new bearings and piston rings, Turbo, APC, CAM grind, port polish head, put in a Intercooler, upgraded the 5 spd tranny, replaced All bushings some with polyurethrane, sway bars, jamex springs boge shocks,and new steering rack, not to mention interior repair etc.) Cost alot and had a life of its own but was alot of fun. My 15 yr old wants it. Unless your in love with your car I would get a '89 or later 900T for the price of the parts to make your car right again. All of these manifolds are cracked I have two in my garage. I would do the timing tensioner upgrade. This car is a piss to drive.
