It is a slight chance that the interlock between shifter rod in transmission and shifter cable has broken.
All depending on if it is the cable side or transmission side determines cost of repair.
The only time I have seen that interlock broken is when I broke it myself of the very first automatic tranny I was disconnecting the cable from. I had no clue what kept it together and didn't know about the little sleeve that was suppose to slide forward to release the cable.
So what you need to do now is to get under the car and loosen the 10mm head bolt that holds the cable to transmission or maybe you can reach it from above. Pull the cable backwards and see what happens.
If it disconnects fron tranmission you will be able to see what failed.
