Fan Motor caught fire to dashboard

Long story short, I'd been ignoring smoke from my dashboard because it happened once and then went away. I thought it was anything but smoke. Well, I pull up into a gas station and then realize that I'm flammable and honk the horn for people to get out of my way so I can pull the car onto the street. The car dash began to smoke horribly and then caught fire.
Too bad. Anyone know what my original problem was? This was, I guess, a 1988 Springtime in Sweden model. I bought it just a month or two ago because it looked like one. So... she's beautiful 'cept for a couple of burnt speaker / vent covers. There, I suppose, is fire extinguisher powder in the dash and the fire department put some water in there to make sure the fire went out. Otherwise, how hard would it be to replace the dash / electrical. The car body / top / interior are as beautiful as you'd get on a 88. Only had 103K miles.
