I'd go with harmonic balancer. One very good reason for the alternator light to stay on is that the belt isn't turning the alternator. One reason for this could be the balancer - the inside is turning, the outside isn't. Or turning much slower. Very common to occur when cold, and when it warms up and things expand, it catches.

If the balancer is as bad as that, it's in danger of coming apart any second. As is, it may be backing into the engine, grinding into the oil pump cover. Now, it could be as simple as a loose belt, but the downside of the harmonic balancer failure is so great that you should get it checked right away. Not next week, not Friday, but I wouldn't drive it again until it's checked. It's a pain on a 900, but not impossible. Draw a chalk mark across the face of the pulley, edge to edge. Start the car a few times. Check the mark - if it is no longer a straight line, then the pulley is shot. Also, visually inspect the rubber between the pieces - if it looks cracked or burned, that's a sign the balancer is shot.

If it were the alternator bearning, that would mean that the bearing was grinding so much that it was making the belt slip on the alternator - that's the only way to make the alternator move too slowly. That should be noticeable with the hood open.

Sometimes when a VR gets old, or the brushes get worn, the alternator doesn't 'start up' properly - the BAT light stays on until you rev the engine; then the voltage jumps up and all is well. That's usually the sign of a worn VR.

I'd check out the harmonic balancer immediately. The downside is loss of all the belts and everything that goes with them - alternator, but more importantly, power steering and water pump. Tow city. The balancer pulley may be grinding into the oil pump cover, which can, if left alone, can cause a catastrophic oil leak and a lunched engine.
