With all due respect to fellow posters, I don't see how it's any different than starting with the electric starter, in regards to what Ari is worried about.
Once it's started, however you spin the motor, feel free to depress the clutch, shift to neutral, and let it sit and idle away on cold starts if you think it's easier on things. That's a debatable point I don't have much opinion on but I do like to let my motor warm up so the car has heat and windshield clearing power when I start off in winter.
Uphill, downhill, on level ground, the oil pickup is located so it should be submerged in oil and instantly able to start pumping it under pressure to the bearings, no matter how you start the motor turning.
How could the stress of spinning the engine with the transmission be any different than the stress of spinning the transmission with the engine? (And it's far more gentle than the stress I put on my personal car's running gear, over and over, every day of my driving life.)
If you have an easy-starting car and hilly home turf, it's a slick and quiet way to start. And if your battery is near its end life, it can be a lifesaver to start that way. It's good practise, in case you ever need to.
