i am by no means a transmission expert, but i do have some experience with killing them...

1992 900T, first tranny i blew the night i purchased the car (the redline and I were becoming well aquainted, i assume atleast partial responsibility), it was due to a lack of fluid. the transmission seized in third gear, i was unable to move the shift lever and the only way to roll the car was to hold the clutch to the floor.

the second transmission i blew (and i will never purchased a used tranny again), lost third gear and then fourth gear in the same day. i was unable to shift into third and then shortly after, the transmission popped out of fourth and refused to go back in without nauseating grinding noises. with what little transmission knowledge i have, i am led to believe that the syncros were worn?

do you hear the 'beating something under there with a hammer' noise only while under power (as compared to coasting while in gear)? if so, i would suspect motor mounts.

motor mounts can be easily tested, by yourself if you are of the lankier sort. open the hood, park pointing up a hill of chock the front wheels and set the parking brake. sit up tall so you can see the engine while you are in the driver's seat, or have a helper (standing to the SIDE!!!) to watch for engine movement. use first gear, give it just a little gas and lift the clutch just until you hit the friction point, as if you were slowly pulling out of a parking spot. you only want to put power to the wheels for a split second, just enough to rock the engine if it is not solidly mounted.

if the front mount is shot, you will see the motor rock or rotate back towards the rear of the car by, say, an inch or two. the motor will rock a bit even if all mounts are 100%, so dont be fooled by a bit of motion.

be sure to not run anything over during the test :P

have you had a chance to inspect everything under the hood and under the car with some good lighting? you might be able to locate the problem this way, if the mounts test out ok. you may not be able to tell if a mount is broken with a simple visual test.
