Pumping the brakes Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: ABS advice, Alex C., Mon, 31 Jan 2005 16:24:36 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The amount of time it takes for the lights to go off is highly variable, and unless it's a really long time (like a minute), I don't sweat it much. But anything you can measure gives people things to worry about.
The amount of time it takes for the lights to go out is dependent on how low the pressure leaked overnight, and how fast your system pumps up (speed and distance, as it were). A system that leaks down faster isn't necessarily a bad system. Pump up speed depends on pump efficiency, alternator voltage, minor voltage drops on relay contacts, and brake fluid viscosity. Seeing as this is the C900 BB, any car is At Least 11 years old - things get tired, and 20 seconds is no big deal.
As to the lights coming on after 5 pumps - that can be a sign of a bad accumulator, BUT, you need to do that after the system reaches full pressure. You have to wait until the pump stops running. When the lights go out, that means that the low limit has been reached, but the pump will keep running for a while. Always make sure that the pump has stopped running. Usually you can do that by ear, but to be safe, wait at least a minute after the lights go out.
It never hurts to flush the fluid. If you end up replacing the accumulator, you'll need to bleed the system, but you won't replace all the fluid. The system should be flushed every two years anyway.
