Generally, LH 2.2 ECUs are pretty hearty, but they do go south on occasion. If you have a friend with an LH 2.2 from any year 900S up to '87 or 900T up to '88, it'll plug right in and work.
If you get one from a 900S, you can bend the tabs on the cover and swap in the EPROM from your old ECU (although you might want to get one from a later LH 2.2 ECU, 'cause the fuel mapping is better), obeying all fo the procedures about static that you'd use when you put a board in your computer.
One thing you might want to do before you get another ECU (unless you want a spare around - not a bad idea, anyway) is to do a couple of checks. Peel back the carpet after taking the other stuff out of the way and check the continuity between the terminals for the pulse from the ignition module. I forget what terminals the wires are on the ECU connector and on the ignition module connector, but you can look those up in Bentley or on TownsendImports.com. You might find that there's a lot of resistance on those signal lines like Adam found in his '87. If that's the case, you'll probably want to remove the lower dash to get at the bulkhead connectors. If that's the problem, we'll talk you through it. It's not bad the second time.
I forget whether you can drop the ECU/FP&System Relay mount from the outside on an LH 2.2 car (you can do that on the later ones.) But if you can, this would be a good time to check the Fuel Pump Relay without dropping the lower dash. I think it's the front relay. You can bend the tabs and take the metal cover off. On old 900s ... well, they're all old, now ... I've seen pitting on the contacts for the fuel pump that can prevent it from running when they're really bad. I think that they're available from places like eEuroparts for around $15.
