Ask to see their work. At any given time we have 10 cars in the shop at various stages of repair, so a busy shop could be an indication of quality work.
I would imagine most shops use a basecoat/clearcoat system, since the majority of cars come factory with that, except say C-900's which are solid colored(no clearcoat)...as opposed to metallic(which are all clearcoated). The shop I'm at clearcoats every paint job, since that's the only system we have to work with. PPG makes a DCC urethane system which is for solid colors and needs no clear, and it is just as durable as the clearcoated system. Will the shop you choose offer that system to you if yours is a solid color?...and the paint is a tad bit lower in cost.
A few more questions to ask...what brand paint do they use?...PPG, DuPont, Martin Senior, etc....What system do they use?...some systems PPG makes are "low budget" paints. We use the top of the line PPG system(DBU) because their color matching/mixing is the best in the world, but we do not use PPG's clear, since they are grossly over priced on their product. Ask to talk to the painter> has he been painting cars for six months or 20 years? Do they sand and buff after painting? We do to almost every job before it leaves, and we don't charge extra for it. Will they charge extra? It can make a nice paint job freakin gorgeous! Will they mask off door jambs to prevent overspray?, or whatever blows in is good to them...will they paint door jambs if need be?
You can save money by doing some work yourself(removing parts, sanding the old finish), as has been said numerous times before on this BB. Prep work is 75% of any paint job.
Any other info you need, just ask...I read the BB's daily.
