Two separate issues with one source: ILSAC "GF" standards.
One is the anti-wear ingredient zinc disomethingphosphate (it's a technical term). ILSAC requires less of it - 0.08% in current formulations, with 0.06% on the horizon. Diesel engine oil, by comparison, measures .12%
The other is friction modifiers. Synchronizers requre friction to work properly, and ILSAC gasoline engine oil is required to be "energy conserving", that means friction modifiers are normally added.
One choice is to use a transmission lubricant, like Honda MTF or RedLine MTL or any of the other transmission lubricants people have had good luck with. Another choice is to use HD Diesel motor oil - 15W-40 is the usual grade. Diesel oil usually has lots of anti-wear, and seldom has friction modifiers. Shell Rotella T is one that fits the bill.
As for viscosity, 20W has about the same viscosity as 75 weight gear oil, which was Saab's factory fill before they switched to motor oil. 15W-40 slides neatly between the old 75 weight gear oil and the newer 10W30 motor oil. Current production Saabs use a synthetic based transmission lubricant.
