My daily driver is an '88 900S with the 16v engine. I run regular 87 octane gas. I have no trouble exceeding the speed limit anywhere I've driven the car. This isn't intentional, it just seems to happen.
The trick to driving a normally aspirated car is to keep the revs in the 3k-5k range. Yes it will be a little buzzy, but this is where the benefits of a 16v engine really appear. I don't have trouble passing cars on the freeway - you just have to down shift to 4th do it confortably.
City driving is different however - lots of kids and dogs around and I live on a busy street - In the city I generally try to drive 5mph slower than the posted limit to assuage my conscience. The trick to driving the 5spd around town is to never downshift when you're coming to a stop (just go to neutral and use the brakes - pads are cheap enough) and when you start out if at all possible start from 2nd and feather the clutch to avoid the ponderous 1-2 shift (this is especially pertinent in winter when the car seems to shift even slower).
