88 1/2 900S (I think it's a tweener), 331,000 miles, orig and working 5 spd. Hates 1st-2nd shift when it's cold out (we're in Wisconsin, so that's alot of cold, alot of the time), but shifts like a dream when warmed-up and/or warm out. I think your concerns re: tranny replacement cost vs vehicle cost can be dismissed. Not so sure about your confusion of cost vs value.
Let's say you bought the pristine 900 for $1000 and the tranny dumped on you the day after sale. You'd likely be pissed, but for $1500 - $2000 additional to r/r, you'd have $2500 - 3,000 in a car that (a) is a pleasure to own and drive, and (b) you would (probably) be able to enjoy, own, and drive for, say, 231,000 more miles. What alternative $3000 car (worst case scenario, or $1000 in your likely case) can you find with that potential?
As the financial types like to say, past performance is no guarantee of future returns, but the past/present performance record of classic 900s seems pretty remarkable to me, IMHO.
