It sounds to me like the bolts holding the steering column to the dashboard and crossmember(s) are loose. If the looseness is in the column itself and everything is tight, it's probably the steering countershaft U-joint; I'm dealing with two failures on two cars right now. One's too tight (lack of lubrication, worn out) and the other's too loose (front end aligners from previous owner were clueless on how to straighten the wheel, you could just spin the tie rods duhhh)
Remove the knee bolster (not so easy on an SRS car as I'm coming to realize) and check bolts and such underneath the steering column. Once I fix this on my '92 convertible I will be able to provide better details.
