When you overheat the motor, a few things can happen....1-nothing, 2-warp the head and the gasket blows through to the cooling system/Oil passage/out to atmosphere, 3-head cracks. Do a compression check to see if there are cylinders that have very low compression. This will be an indicator to where you need to look for a problem as the head is removed. A blown gasket can be found by looking at the old gasket and surfaces...somewhat of an easy fix, verify flatness and replace the gasket. A cracked head is more difficult. It took 2 days of occasionally looking at a head before I found a crack that allowed all the coolant to dump out the exhaust. The crack was between the valves. Only a replacement head fixed that. READ THIS IF YOU OVERHEAT-get to the root cause of the problem and fix it...then replace the thermostat. 100% of the the overheating problems I have fixed needed to have the T-Stat replaced. The wax in the T-Stat somehow oozed out and changed the opening characteristics. This can drive you nuts and make you replace unnecessary $ parts.
