'93 900S -- Fuel pump orientation in gas tank?

I went to deal with a fuel pump puddle atop the gas tank on my early-93 900S and noticed that the fuel pump wasn't oriented in the the way shown in the Bentley manual, it was about 90-degrees clockwise. The manual shows a mark on the pump and a mark on the tank that need to align, and warns of dire consequences if not so aligned. But my tank has no mark! -- I looked carefully, everywhere.

Lacking a mark, I rotated the pump to match the picture. Everything was fine until I went to attach the white plastic cover for the inlet and outlet lines -- the gas lines were now in the way. Not enough room to clear the openings in the plastic piece, they were stretched fairly tight just reaching the pump.

Question: is the Bentley manual correct in this case? Can I assume that someone shortened my lines, creating the problem? Or is the lack of a corresponding alignment mark on the gas tank indicative of orientation not mattering on this model / year?

(This adventure in gas-leak repair ended poorly -- as I returned the pump to its original position the 90-degree return-line plastic fitting broke. D!MN! Here in Hawaii Saabs are totally rare -- there're no dealers anywhere -- so the car is now down until I can locate and air-ship in a replacement piece. Got one handy?)
