Okay, that helped. Knowing that they're hard to find even on the mainland pushed me to try rigging something. I happened to have a brass 90-degree fitting that had 1/4" threads on one leg and a hose barb on the other. Hose barb fit the gas line perfectly; 1/4" threads fit snugly into the hole... ...but of course with pressure gas came flying out of there. Not really expecting it to work I took the O-rings off of the old fitting and slipped them on, both of them, all the way past the threads and to where they could go no further. With the plastic hold-down in place -- plus a small washer for extra tightness -- it doesn't leak at all! I was pretty stunned that this worked. Granted there's no check valve in the line now but I'll take a working car with some potential problems over a dead one any day.
