I rebuilt the front end on my 900 this weekend, courtesy of a bad inner CV joint. Here are some thoughts:
1. It's not a tough job. I was worried about rust, as my car has lived through 14 Chicago winters. The axle nuts came off easy with a 2 ft breaker bar and a 4 ft pipe. I pre-soaked the ball joint mounting nuts with Busty. I did not have difficulty getting anything loose, and I used only hand tools.
2. The exhuast pipe next to the passenger side inner joint is a bad thing. Out of four CV joints, the passeneger side inner joint was the only one that was bad. No grease was left, and two out of three bearings were shot. The boot was intact, but the heat from the exhaust had ruined the grease. Upon reassembly, I wrapped the exhaust pipe under the joint with a universal heat shield (typically for starters). I'll see how well it holds up.
3. Any machine shop should be able to press out the old bearings and press in the new bearings. My shop charged me $40 per side.
4. I had the dust shields and lower a-arms powder coated for better rust resistance.
5. Why take chances? Saab ball joints will probably last longer than I will have the car. Mine were stamped 'TRW'.
