Thanks for your input! I've encountered the stuck valve issue before, the cylinder pressure went out to the intake manifold as you mention and caused the air flap on the fuel distributor to "backfire" or slam shut periodically. I of course had to change the head, the new ones gone approximately 100 000 miles while the rest of the engine has 180 000 miles on it. This B201 engine only has spring lifters by the way, but of course the springs may be shot too.
Considering the rod knock issue: The knocking only starts after 20-30 seconds of normal idling after start, it's not there from the beginning, and goes away by itself after 2-3 minutes. If it were a rod, wouldn't the knocking more likely be there from start and until warm enough?
Further, when the knocking stops it does so gradually as if an on/off switch is thrown rapidly. First a mere second of normal running, then back to the knocking for a little, some more normal running, rapidly back and forth until its running ok. There's no gradual transition, is this a characteristic of the rod problem?
I've spoken to a mechanic I know and he advised me to disconnect the 5th fuel valve on the intake, in case this is seizing and pouring fuel continuously. His theory is that flooding causes incorrect combustion and bad ignition, thus producing the gas smell out the exhaust.
I'd be grateful for any further advice!
Best regards,
Jimmy S.
