Hi

Today my '87 8-valve Turbo started knocking weirdly after cold start. The engine cranked over and started normally, then after 20-30 seconds of idling the knocking commenced, with a sound out the exhaust as if a cylinder was missing and a slight smell of gas. Then after about three minutes idling at approx. 800 rpm the knocking gradually disappears (in an on-off fashion), then normal idling but at 1300 rpm(!). When driving there is no indication of trouble whatsoever. The same process repeated itself after cool-down, ambient temperature today was about 4 degrees celsius.

My car has the C-Jetronic injection system and thus virtually no electronics. I was thinking about the knock sensor being the culprit, but could a defective unit possibly cause the smell of gas out the exhaust?

I'd be very appreciative of any tips, I'm not very good at diagnosing the engine myself...
