Don't sell that steel short - - if it were in any way possible to damage it by a few hammer blows, even massive blows with big fat hammers, it wouldn't be used for steering knuckles. The "right" place, by the way, is on its side anywhere within about 45 degrees either way from square on the side.
What you don't want to do is hit it in a straight line with the tie rod such that the shock is carried straight to the case-hardened ball socket at its rack end, or into the interior of the rack. Hammer blows can spall (net crack) hardened steel, such as ball bearing races, ball bearings, or hardened ball sockets as on end of rack, and then the hardened metal would likely crack off from the base over time and come apart, leaving a mess to look at if you chose to when you went to replace your rack, as would be required. But just don't be so foolish as to hammer in that direction.
Shock waves from the hammer blow and temporary micro-deflection of the steel break the perfect mating of the taper and it pops free. It's a kick to do, it's so simple. Needs a big hammer, 24 oz or more, and some powerful swings.
