mileage question

Hi all,
I'm wondering about the mileage that people claim to get on their cars. I've read posts of people getting 25 - 27 mpg or even 30 if I remember correctly. That would correlate to a range of 400 - 432 miles or even 480 miles per tankful.
With mixed driving, I usually get around 17 - 20 mpg. The range on a tank is almost always around 260 - 300 miles/tank. With mosly freeway driving, I'll get a range of about 340 - 380 miles which is about 21 - 23 mpg. I usually drive fairly agressively (I mean "in a spirited fashion"). The car I mainly use is an '89 900T with a modified APC, 3.0 bar FPR and a modified AID. The car's had the headgascet replaced and has no leaks. This mileage is also typicall for my older, unmodified '85 SPG.
Can my mileage actually be that under par?
Thanks.
