I'm in the process of doing mine (for the first time). So far, taking it a part wasn't a terribly hard job. Took about 2 1/2 hours to tear everything down. Of course I still have to put it all back together. I've been taking my time, so I don't screw anything up. I had the head worked over by a machine shop that specializes in rebuilding engines. They told me it was in remarkably good shape (no warpage, minimal valve guide wear), but I had them refit the valves and surface it anyways. Total cost with new gasket set is about $300.
If you decide to do it yourself, make sure you have the right size torx socket (mine's an E16) in a half inch drive for the head bolts. The one I had was 3/8 and I was sure it was gonna break during disassembly. It didn't, but a got a 1/2 drive to put it back together as you really have to crank down on them.
There's a couple of sites with some great info on the subject. twinsaabs.com has the whole procedure laid it with pictures and even beer breaks! And of course, townsendimports.com also has the procedure listed along with some good tips. Listen, I'm no expert, and I feel pretty comfortable with it so far. Go a head and give it a shot. $300 isn't much to keep your beloved Saab on the road.
Good Luck!
