Black smoke? Probably more a problem with the FPR than from the oil. The red silicone, on the other hand, probably left a lot of flakes that were thinking about clogging some of the smaller oil passages. Townsend Imports had a good caveat about avoiding silicone for supplementing gaskets.
That's a tough question about blasting away with a power washer. I'd say yes if you were able to seal the primary shaft opening with something that wouldn't be punctured by the water stream - maybe a 1/4" thick aluminum piece with holes bored in it so it could be attached to the slave mounting holes, and sealed with some good gasket material.
As far as opening it up, before I put the new used transmission in my '88, I plan on taking the rear cover off to get whatever large pieces may be in there and to see if the pinion gear will move by hand pressure. I also plan on taking off the side cover where the level dipstick so the gears can get a looking at. That's about $20 in gaskets, but it'll give me an idea of whether I picked a halfway decent transmission.
It's good to hear that, other than the transmission, your '86 is still going strong. Did you ever track down the cause of the interrmittent high idle?
